PM engages ITOCHU Corporation in talks for strategic investment in Eswatini

Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has engaged in a significant meeting with Shinya Ishizuka, the Chief Executive Officer of ITOCHU Corporation Africa Bloc, alongside Mr. Alex Young, the Group Strategy Officer at Texray Industrial Co., Ltd, Japan.

This high-profile discussion centred around exploring potential investment opportunities in Eswatini, reflecting the nation’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and economic growth.

ITOCHU Corporation stands as one of Japan’s foremost general trading and investment companies, commonly referred to as Sogo Shosha.

With a robust portfolio that encompasses domestic trading, import/export, and overseas trading, ITOCHU is involved in a diverse range of sectors, including textiles, machinery, metals, minerals, energy, chemicals, food, general products, realty, information and communication technology (ICT), and finance.

The company operates approximately 90 bases across 61 countries, showcasing its extensive global reach and influence.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Dlamini and Ishizuka delved into various sectors where ITOCHU could potentially invest in Eswatini. Notably, they discussed opportunities in energy and chemicals, mining, ICT, and agriculture.

The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of agriculture, particularly highlighting the mass production of sesame and coffee aimed at export markets.

These discussions underscore Eswatini’s strategic position as a viable destination for foreign investment, particularly in sectors that align with global market demands.

In a bid to strengthen ties and encourage investment, Prime Minister Dlamini assured ITOCHU Corporation of Eswatini’s unwavering support for investors.

He invited the corporation to consider Eswatini as a “second home away from Japan,” indicating the government’s readiness to facilitate a conducive environment for business operations.

This invitation is part of a broader strategy to attract quality investors and enhance economic collaboration between Japan and Eswatini.

The Prime Minister also reflected on his recent visit to Japan, where he met with his counterpart, H.E. Shigeru Ishiba.

During this visit, Ishiba expressed a strong commitment to supporting Eswatini in attracting quality investors from Japan.

Furthermore, he extended an invitation to His Majesty King Mswati III to attend the upcoming 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) scheduled for August.

This conference is a pivotal platform for African nations to engage with Japanese investors and stakeholders, fostering dialogue and collaboration on development issues.

The discussions between Prime Minister Dlamini and ITOCHU Corporation’s leadership signify a promising step towards enhancing economic ties between Eswatini and Japan.

As Eswatini seeks to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment, partnerships with established global corporations like ITOCHU could play a crucial role in driving sustainable development and economic resilience.

The meeting between Prime Minister Dlamini and ITOCHU Corporation’s executives marks a significant milestone in Eswatini’s investment landscape.
